1. Policy Purpose

The Student Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for behavior, professionalism, and integrity at Mountainland Technical College (MTECH) for all students. 

The Code of Conduct is rooted in MTECH’s Mission, Vision, and Values to foster a positive and safe learning environment, prepare students for the workforce, and promote respect, integrity, and accountability.

2. Definitions

Disruptive Behavior - Behavior that interferes with the learning environment, teaching process, or normal operations of the college.

4. Policy

4.1 Core Principles

4.1.1 Respect for Others – Demonstrating civility, inclusion, and professionalism.

4.1.2 Integrity – Upholding academic honesty and ethical behavior.

4.1.3 Safety – Complying with all campus safety regulations and program-specific safety protocols.

4.1.4 Responsibility – Being accountable for one’s actions, attendance, and the proper use of college resources.

4.2 Student Rights

Students at MTECH have the right to:

4.2.1 A safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.

4.2.2 Academic freedom and freedom of expression (within legal and professional boundaries).

4.2.3 Due process in disciplinary matters (MTECH Policy 600.623).

4.2.4 Access to resources, including academic counseling, disability services (ADA compliance- MTECH Policy 600.614), and grievance procedures (MTECH Policy 600.608).

4.2.5 Protection from discrimination and harassment as outlined in Title IX and Discrimination Policy (MTECH Policy 300.304).

4.2.6 Financial aid transparency to understand and access details about financial aid as found on our webpage and MTECH Policies 800.806, 800.811, and 800.813. 

4.2.7 Academic privacy and access to records as outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and MTECH Policy 600.601 and Procedure 600.601.

4.3 Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for:

4.3.1 Meeting academic and attendance requirements (MTECH Policy 600.611).

4.3.2 Maintaining academic integrity (MTECH Policy 600.617).

4.3.3 Following program-specific dress codes and safety standards as outlined in the course syllabus.

4.3.4 Respecting the rights, property, and safety of others.

4.3.5 Complying with local, state, and federal laws.

4.4 Standards of Conduct

4.4.1 Academic Misconduct

4.4.1.1 Cheating, plagiarism, falsification, or aiding others in misconduct.

4.4.2 Behavioral Misconduct

4.4.2.1 Harassment, discrimination, bullying, or threats.

4.4.2.2 Physical harm or threats of harm.

4.4.2.3 Disruptive classroom or campus behavior.

4.4.3 Substance Use Violations

4.4.3.1 Possessing, using, distributing, or being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or controlled substances on any MTECH campus (Drug and Alcohol-Free Campus Policy) or at any MTECH supervised or sponsored off-campus activity, including work-based learning activities.

4.4.4 Technology Misuse

4.4.4.1 Unauthorized access to college systems.

4.4.4.2 Accessing pornography or inappropriate material via college networks.

4.4.5 Property Violations

4.4.5.1 Theft, vandalism, or misuse of college property or equipment.

4.4.6 Professional Standards

4.4.6.1 Failure to comply with industry-specific conduct or clinical and externship site rules.

5. Disciplinary Procedures: Non Due Process

When the alleged violation does not merit possible dismissal from the College with the exception of academic dishonesty:

5.1 Step 1: Reporting - Any suspected violation should be reported to the Program Director, instructor, or MTECH Security.

5.2 Step 2: Investigation - Relevant facts are gathered, and the student is informed of the alleged violation.

5.3 Step 4: Determination & Sanctions - Outcomes are based on severity, intent, and prior conduct record.

5.4 Step 5: Appeal - Students may appeal according to the appeal for policy variance if they believe the procedure taken was in violation of an MTECH policy.

6. Disciplinary Procedures: Due Process

When the result may end in dismissal from the College and is not related to academic dishonesty:

6.1 Step 1: Reporting - Any suspected violation should be reported to the Program Director, instructor, or MTECH Security.

6.2 Step 2: Investigation - Relevant facts are gathered, and the student is informed of the alleged violation.

6.3 Step 3: Meeting / Hearing - The student is given an opportunity to respond and present information.

6.4 Step 4: Determination & Sanctions - Outcomes are based on severity, intent, and prior conduct record.

6.5 Step 5: Appeal - Students may appeal if specific conditions occur, per MTECH Policy 600.623 (Due Process).

7. Possible Sanctions

7.1 Verbal or written warning.

7.2 Student Success Plan or probation.

7.3 Restitution for damages.

7.4 Suspension from class or program.

7.5 Dismissal from MTECH.

7.6 Referral to law enforcement when applicable.

7.7 Restricted access to specified areas on campus

8. Support Resources

8.1 Academic Counseling – Guidance on educational challenges and ADA accommodations.

8.2 Career Services – Job placement, resume help, and interview preparation.

8.3 Mental Health Resources – Referral to local and campus-based supports.

8.4 Safety & Security – Reporting and prevention resources.

9. Review and Revision

9.1 The MTECH Executive Staff and Board of Trustees will review this policy annually to ensure compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.
